⚓Facts about STARS in the sky ⚓
DEFINITION:
* Star is an astronomical object.
* It is a luminous spheroid.
* It comprises of plasma held together by self-gravity.
* It is also defines as a self-luminous gaseous spheroidal celestial body of great mass which produces energy by means of nuclear fusion reactions.
* Stars are huge celestial bodies made mostly of hydrogen and helium that produce light and heat.
DISTANCE OF STARS:
Stars are very far away from Earth therefore they look like a point object (very tiny) when observed from the surface of the earth.
The distance of stars from the earth is measured in the following 2 units:
a. Lightyear
b. Parsec
a. Lightyear - It is the distance travelled by light in one year.
Therefore,
1LY = 9.46 x 10^12 kms
b. Parsec - It represents the distance at which the radius of Earth's orbit subtends an angle of 1 second of arc. This unit is used by professional astronomers for expressing distances to stars and galaxies.
Therefore,
1Parsec(Pc) = 3.26 LY
Note: Sun is also a star which is closest to the Earth.
Apart from Sun, there are 3 stars of Alpha Centauri triple star system (4.24 - 4.37 LY). The closest of these stars is Proxima Centauri which is about 4.24 LY away.
HOW MANY STARS ARE THERE:
As far as the recent study is concerned there are about 200 sextillions (i.e., 200 billion trillion) stars in the universe. And out of these 100 thousand million stars are in the Milky Way alone.
FUN:
In everyday life we hear the word stars in the form of song, poem, phrases, sentences, idioms, etc.
For instance,
1. Twinkle Twinkle Little Star - But actually the stars are not little, they are huge. Also, stars don't twinkle, this happens only because of refraction that it appears like it twinkles.
2. Shine like a star - As star produces an enormous amount of energy to shine, people refer to stars to motivate or boost someone.
3. There are many songs related to stars, but if you actually know what a star is then you will find those funny.
⇉ This will give you a gist of what is a star but that is not all, there are many more facts related to stars, so stay tuned with fabfact to know fabulous facts around you.
